How to avoid a reckless driving charge

On Behalf of | Oct 13, 2023 | Traffic Offenses Blog Post |

A charge of reckless driving can lead to serious legal consequences. Fines, license suspension and even jail time are all real possibilities.

It remains in your best interest to steer clear of trouble. Reviewing a list of roadworthy behaviors necessary to avoid a reckless driving charge is a mature and admirable decision.

Obey speed limits

One of the most common reasons for a reckless driving charge is fast driving. Always adhere to posted speed limits, especially when there is excessive sun glare or creeping fog. Remember that exceeding the speed limit by 20 miles per hour and driving faster than 80 are equally dangerous and against the law.

Pass cautiously

Be extra careful when overtaking a vehicle. Double-check that it is safe to do so, and never try to go past someone in areas with limited visibility, such as curves or hills. Also, passing on double solid lines is a violation that all drivers must reject.

Respect school buses

When a school bus is at a stop, and its red lights are flashing, you must wait until the vehicle resumes its journey before proceeding. It is tough to see little ones crossing the street, and an accident with a child is a fast path to conflict.

Drive sober

Operating a motor vehicle while under the influence is exceptionally reckless. Sadly, intoxicated driving accounts for 28 deaths daily or one person every 52 minutes. Arrange a sober driver if you plan on consuming alcohol or any substances, such as recreational marijuana. If no one is available, use a ridesharing service.

Avoiding a reckless driving charge requires responsible and cautious driving habits, and adhering to the rules of the road helps keep you plus everyone else danger-free. At its core, safety on the road is a shared responsibility.
